Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
A time outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period when you can sign up for health insurance. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you've had certain life events, including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or adopting a child.
How It Works
Depending on your Special Enrollment Period type, you may have 60 days before or 60 days following the qualifying life event to enroll in a plan. You can enroll in Marketplace health insurance any time of year if you qualify.
Important: The 60-day window typically starts from the date of your qualifying life event (such as losing coverage, getting married, or moving). Don't wait—coverage may not be retroactive.
What Qualifies as a Life Event?
Common qualifying life events include losing job-based coverage, moving to a new area, getting married, having or adopting a child, and more.

The Marketplace may ask you to provide documents to prove your eligibility for a Special Enrollment Period. Be prepared to submit documentation such as:
- • Notice of loss of coverage from previous insurer
- • Marriage certificate or divorce decree
- • Birth certificate or adoption papers
- • Proof of address change or moving documents
- • Other relevant documentation depending on your qualifying event
Don't Miss Your Window!
The 60-day enrollment window is strict. If you miss it, you'll likely have to wait until the next Open Enrollment Period to get coverage unless you experience another qualifying life event. Act quickly to ensure you don't have a gap in coverage.
