What is Get Covered New Jersey?

Get Covered NJ is New Jersey's state-based health insurance marketplace, run by the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance. It is the only place New Jersey residents can buy individual or family ACA plans and qualify for both federal premium tax credits and additional New Jersey state subsidies. Before 2021, NJ used HealthCare.gov; today, all enrollment happens through Get Covered NJ.

When is Open Enrollment for Get Covered NJ?

Open Enrollment for 2026 coverage runs from November 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026, about two weeks longer than the federal HealthCare.gov deadline, which is one of the perks of New Jersey running its own marketplace. To have coverage start January 1, you need to enroll by December 31. Plans selected after that start the first of the month following enrollment.

What are NJ Health Plan Savings (NJHPS)?

New Jersey Health Plan Savings (NJHPS) are state-funded subsidies that lower your monthly premium on top of any federal premium tax credit you qualify for. For 2026, the state is providing roughly $215 million in NJHPS to help NJ residents afford coverage. NJHPS is automatic. If you qualify, it is applied during enrollment without a separate application. This stacking of state and federal help is one reason New Jersey premiums are often lower than nearby states.

Do I qualify for NJ state subsidies in 2026?

NJHPS is available to households with annual incomes up to 600% of the federal poverty level, significantly higher than the federal subsidy cap of 400%. For 2026, that means an individual earning up to about $93,900 or a family of four earning up to about $192,900 may qualify for state savings. Does New Jersey have an individual mandate?

Yes. New Jersey is one of the few states with its own individual health insurance mandate. Residents who do not have qualifying coverage and do not qualify for an exemption owe a Shared Responsibility Payment penalty on their state tax return. The penalty can be hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on household size and income. Enrolling in a Get Covered NJ plan satisfies the mandate.

Can I keep my doctor with a Get Covered NJ plan?

It depends on the plan's network. Get Covered NJ offers plans from carriers including AmeriHealth, Horizon BCBSNJ, Oscar Insurance, and Ambetter, each with their own network of doctors and hospitals.
